Treatment losses originating from separation increase lubricating oil consumption to some extent. Low lubricating oil consumption is preferred as it reduces particulate emissions and exhaust gas boiler fouling. Ali these factors will affect the total operating costs of a planı, which means !hat that the lubricating oil must be of high enough quality to cope with low oil consumption without deteriorating too soon. Testing and approval of lubricating oils Ali lubricating oils used in Wartsila and Sulzer engines must be tested and approved before authorization. Wartsila has a specific procedure for l ubricating oil testing as indicated in Figure8. First, detailed information about base oils, additives and the finished candidate product along with samples must he supplied to Wartsila for evaluation. lf the candidate lubricating oil looks promising, an approval test can be agreed with the oil company in question. The next step for the oil company is to find a suitable test installation. MAKALE/ ARTICLE Summary The following summarizes the points made above: t The correct type of l ubricating oil depends on the application t Oshnolyuldapbperouvseeddor recommended lubricating oils t When operating on heavy fuel oil, use of high BN (50-55:) products will ensure longer change intervals and betler engine cleanliness t Low lubricating oil consumption resulting from the anti-polishing ring raises lubricating oil stress, and more stringent quality requirements are necessary to achieve safe engine operation t rLeodnugceoilpclahnange intervals are preferred in order to t operating costs. The next challenge for lubricating oil manufacturers developing products for medium-speed diesel engines operating on heavy fuel oil is a l ubricating oil lifetime equal to the piston overhaul interval. Once ali the details are agreed, the test itself is allowed to start. lf the engine has already been in service, an initial engine inspection is required, hut if the engine First requirements - lnformation - Samples ei sn gn ei nwe, creofme rpeonnceen tvsa l uaer es af ol rresapdeyc i f i c available and the initial engine in spection is not needed. The test period lasts at least 4000 oil service hours during which regular sampling is done to monitor the condition of the lubricating oil and fuel q co u n a s lit u y m . p Factors including lubricating oil tion, cleaning of the centrifugal filter, the separation temperature and separate rate of the lubricating oil, and the oil's temperature, pressure and flow are recorded as these ali affect the oil's performance. The test period is followed bcoymapfoinnaelnengine inspection. Specific ts are photographed and component wear along with possible c d o e n p d o i sit layers is measured. The tion of some components is visually evaluated as well. The candidate product will be either approved or rejected for general use in Wartsila & Sulzer engines based on the engine condition and lubricating oil performance. • Base Oils • Base Oils • Additives • Lubricating Oil • Lubricating Oil Engine inspection 1 Field test * 4000 h under normal operation • Lube and fuel sampling • Samples to Wartsila and lube oil company • Analyses made by lube oil company • Recording of lube consumption, filters, seperator Final inspection Approval / Rejection Figure 8: Lubricating oil approval procedure.
