54 ARTICLE / MAKALE and other hazardous preservatives, while only recycled ar certified sustainable materials are used in Hayward's business premises. The solar array, which is installed over an existing waterproof membrane and covers 1340 m2 of rooftop surface area, generates enough electricity during the day ta power over 115 homes. The electricity generated is a significant component in lowering operating costs and reducing building energy loads and peak demand costs. Over the next 25 years, Hayward Lumber's solar project will reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 720 tonnes. Combined water and energy savings measures have helped Hayward ta achieve gold-level certification from the US Green Building Council's green building rating system - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.1 Power reliability and quality offer critical business benefits. World Water of New Jersey is one company that utilizes PV ta drive large 45-450 kW pumps and compressors. Locke Ranch ine. of Firebaugh, Califarnia installed a solar pumping unit ta power a 30 kW irrigation pump and lighting system far its barn and farm offices. The solar power system produces more power than is used at times, which then spins the electricity meler backwards (known as 'net metering'). A similar system is installed at Lehr Brothers ine. of Edison, California. Lehr's solar-driven hydracooler directly powers the refrigeration unit's 260 kW compressor pump which was previously being impaired by surges and swells in electric power and power outages. Refrigeration, industrial process controls and motors, and communications and computing - all require quality power and reliability. The final example deals with commercial systems ta address green power and demonstrate good corporate citizenship ar 'green branding'. Following the tremendous success ofa solar power installation at its Neutrogena headquarters in Los Angeles, Califarnia, pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson decided ta initiate a second solar power project at Spring House, Pennsylvania, the home ofa subsidiary, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical. The Spring House project is the first PV system ta be installed in Johnson & Johnson premises in Pennsylvania, and is one of three such projects commissioned by a member of the Johnson & Johnson group. lnstalled by Powerlight of Califarnia in April 2002, the 75 kW system comprises 1750 PV panels covering a surface area of 1580 m2 . Power from the installation feeds electricity into the main electrical system at the Spring House facility. The PV array at Spring House will alsa help reduce the company's energy consumption by approximately 80 MWh per year. Over the system's lifetime, it is estimated that NO, emissions will be reduced by 3700 kg and carbon dioxide emissions by 1440 tonnes. Fuel cells and biomass Fuel cells are beginning ta demonstrate their commercial potential, offering reliable, efficient energy generation by 1 ENERJi & KOJENERASYON OÜNYASI using hydrogen ta produce electricity with little ar na pollution ar noise. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel cells use a refarming unit ta extract hydrogen from propane fuel befare transporting it into the electricity-producing fuel celi stack. The only by-products are heat, clean water and a small amount of carbon dioxide. in June 2004, Plug Power of New York announced that its 5 kW fuel celi operation was helping ta reduce energy costs at a local dairy in New York State. lnstalled in February 2004 at Wagner Farm, a 300-cow dairy farm in Eagle Milis, Rensselaer County, the on-site, LPG-fuelled fuel celi is used ta heat the milking parlour during the winter. The celi has operated far more than 2000 hours, generating approximately 4800 kWh of power and 16 GJ of heat. According ta Dr Roger Saillant, President and Chief Executive Officer of Plug Power: 'We have sited more than 400 fuel celi systems serving a variety of applications over the past five years. The installation at Wagner Farm is important ta us since it represents a brand new application far our fuel celi system and it allows us ta gain additional insight in operating a system in this type of environment.' in addition ta Wagner Farm, Plug Power has installed a fuel celi at Stanton's Dairy Farm in Coeymans Hollow, Albany County, and is now starting ta facus on displacing large battery banks with fuel cells. A number of biogas and biomass projects are alsa underway. PGI, a Houston-based company, has been developing biomass systems ta produce clean heat and power. lts new 1.5 MW direct-fired gasification cogeneration unit will be able ta utilize different types of biomass, and projects are planned far central US and Poland. Meanwhile, a German firm, Entec, has installed several biogas-fuelled systems in dairies and pig farms in Europe and the US. PROMISING FUTURE BECKONS A new trend in the market has appeared in 2004, with the emergence of new 'plug and play' ar 'plop and drop' systems - elegant, user-friendly and modular, with interchangeable ar 'add on' components. Examples include: Shell Solar's Ouick Deploy system; SkyBuilt's hybrid PV-wind shipping container units; Elevated Energy's PV-wind cellular/security trailers; Verdant's free-flow micro hydropower units on pontoons; Community Power's trucked 250 kW biomass gasifier; plus fuel celi systems from Plug Power's GenCore and Reli-On. The future has never looked sa promising. As renewable and clean distributed generation systems become more standardized, ta include financing deals with service agreements, many commercial and some residential consumers will see such systems proliferating in their neighbourhoods over the next five years.
