The main culprit is the widespread use of fossil fuels. The United Nations and the EU have been tackling global emission levels for some time now, saying it is imperative to curb global warming. These organizations have created legal frameworks, trading systems and agreements to stabilize C02 emissions. The two most important for business, the EU emissions trading system and the Kyoto Protocol are now fully ratified and have been legally binding since January 1 st and February 16th 2005 respectively. The Kyoto Protocol ca/1s for industrialized nations to reduce harmful emissions to at least 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. Up to 128 nations have signed on. Kyoto defines three mechanisms by which industria/ized countries can reduce emissions. Al/ involve co-operation with other countries: a joint implementation system, a clean development mechanism, and emissions trading. f to o A r r j p e o o d in l u l t u c t i e m io p n h l a e c r m r m e e f d u n i l t t s a e . t m i A o i n s c sl s e io y a n s n t s e d m i e n v t e a h l lo l e o p w a m s tm e i n o n t d s pu m h s e e tr c r i h a e a l i o z n f e is d o m t c h a o el u r lo n K w tr y s i o e p t s o a t r o c t i o c s u i e p n t a tr un ie t p s s p t i o r n o p j r e e u c r tu t s s r u ne ee mm ii ss ss ii oo nn sr-e da nudc t itohne ienmdi es sv ieol nosp i nagc coouun nt rtyr i easv oi ni drse- t ua rren fnoorwp ot rl al udt iaobnl ec rceodmi tms . oCd Oi t i2e s .
