From Black Triangle to Green Triangle Foster Wheeler's Turow project (Turow Power Plant From Lignite Fired CFB Boilers) brought nearly 1 .500 Mwe of CFB capacity to the Polish grid. Back at the beginning of the 1 990s, there was up to 14,000 MWofgenerating capacity in the area within a 50 km radius. As the largest single unit, Tur6w became very much identified with the pollution problem. The Tur6w rehabilitation project has covered the modernization ofthe major part of the original 1 0-block plant, replacing six pulverized coal (PC) boiler island and turbine islands with new CFB units and modernized or new turbines. The contract for the start of the project was signed in 1 994. The first two blocks were handed over in 1998, the third in 2000, the fourth in March 2003, the fifth in February 2004, and the last, four months ahead ofschedule, in December 2004. CFB boilers were chosen for ali three stages ofthe project, because ofthe benefits this technology offers. The new units had to be built in the same footprint of the old PC boilers. Tough emission limits were set, but there was insufficient space for installing advanced FGD systems. Tur6w also requested higher output than the 200MWe produced by the old boilers. Wide fuel flexibility was also expected ofthe new boilers, because the parameters of the brown coal used by the power plant can vary quite a lot. The project has seen the installation of six CFB boilers with a total capacity of 1 ,49 1 MWe in the same footprint as the six old PC boilers rated at 1 ,200 MWe.
